Older Volkswagens use a unibody like frame often referred to as the pan. It is simple, flat underneath and light weight. It is able to take a fair amount of abuse and do much better than you would think.

Custom Frames

If your frame is all rotted out, and you have lots of extra money, you can fabricate or purchase a completely redesigned frame. These often include reinforces subframes and improved suspensions.
